Obama, Muslims, and Freedom

Posted on August 6, 2008August 6, 2008 by marc

Steve Clemons says that Barack Obama just threw his “key Muslim advisor under the bus” by allowing his “volunteer national coordinator for Muslim American affairs” to resign after being rather tenuously linked to radical Islam.

In 2000, Mr. Asbahi briefly served on the board of Allied Assets Advisors Fund, a Delaware-registered trust. Its other board members at the time included Jamal Said, the imam at a fundamentalist-controlled mosque in Illinois.

“I served on that board for only a few weeks before resigning as soon as I became aware of public allegations against another member of the board,” Mr. Asbahi said in his resignation letter. “Since concerns have been raised about that brief time, I am stepping down…to avoid distracting from Barack Obama’s message of change.”

From his writing, Mr. Asbahi sounds like an intelligent, reasonable individual, something any political campaign needs.  It’s probable that he’s telling the truth – that he has no relationship to the radical Islamic terrorists that blew up the World Trade Center and have killed tens of thousands in Iraq and elsewhere in the world.

Clemons:

I think that this is outrageous — and those on the left who appreciate Obama and what he may mean for this country must become as tenaciously committed to what is right and what is good — and fighting for that — because those on the other side of these debates are trying to compel Obama to dilute himself.

…We need more Muslims in our diplomatic corps. We need Muslims on the Supreme Court. We need more Muslims like Keith Ellison in the US Senate and House of Representatives.

…

Obama is a Christian. I get that. I’m a secularist hard core — but I won’t stand by to watch more good people be flushed down the political drain because they are Muslims trying to work for a balanced and level playing field in America.

Like Muslims are working for a “balanced and level playing field” in Europe, Steve?  The last thing America needs is to turn into another Great Britain, Holland, or France, countries in which the radical, violent segment of the Muslim minority has stifled the free speech of the majority and terrorized natives of those countries.  “Rioting youths”, anyone?

Canada, our nearest neighbor and, in many respects, the country most like the U.S., has already humbled itself before the alter of political correctness.  This unfortunate bit of governmental cowardice was demonstrated by Ezra Levant’s persecution at the hands of Alberta’s so-called “Human Rights Commission”, the charges of which Mr. Levant has, after nearly 3 years, finally been exonerated.

Ezra Levant:

But I’ve read the dismissal letter three times now, and each time it makes me more angry. Because I haven’t been given my freedom of the press. I’ve simply had the government censor approve what I said. That’s a completely different thing.

Pardeep Gundara – a second-rate bureaucrat, a nobody – had to give me his approval for me to be allowed to go back to my business. For 900 days I was in the dock, waiting for this literary giant to pronounce his judgment on me. And I found favour in his eyes – but barely.

Sorry. I don’t give a damn what Gundara or the HRC says. Getting his approval is not a success. I won’t legitimize his arrogant “authority” by saying “thank you, master”. I’ll say: “who the hell are you? Besides a busy-body bureaucrat?”

Is this the sort of America you envision, Mr. Clemons?  A nation in which Islam and its oppression have an equal footing with your own beloved secularism and the Christianity on which America was founded?  One in which the press has to ask permission before performing its duty to the truth?  What sort of truth can be served in such a manner?

The very notion of an American equating Islam with Christianity is horrifying and Mr. Clemons’ stated intent of promoting Muslim expansionism into American government is, in fact, just this side of suicidal.  Does he know nothing of Europe’s new “troubles” and their single definitive cause?

I suppose I should thank Steve.  Every time I think I might be burned out on blogging I read something that simply demands immediate vocal resistance.  It may well be futile given the weight non-judgmental political correctness carries in certain circles of this country.  Yet resistance in the face of abject surrender – which is what Clemons’ view of Muslim values spreading into American society ultimately represents – is also absolutely necessary.

Barack Obama understands that association with Muslims is dangerous to his candidacy.  Not all Americans are fools, certainly, and we may yet demand that truth be served rather than platitudes and American values be given the precedence they deserve over inferior foreign philosophies.

Is that statement discriminatory?  Absolutely.  America has nothing whatever to gain from Islamification, just as England and the rest of Europe have gained nothing but strife by the recent demographic invasion there.  There is nothing wrong with choosing between good and evil, not even in Alberta.

But I reject the idea that my position is hateful in any way.  Like all other people, Muslims are welcome to immigrate to America provided they check their former allegiances at the door and become Americans.  Immigrants expecting to do otherwise are not be welcome here, regardless of the argument that “we have so much to gain from them”.  We don’t.

Has Lebanon gained from its increase in Islamic peoples?  Has Holland?  No, the former’s national character, indeed the nation itself, has been destroyed and the latter’s is in serious jeopardy of doing so.  Are we to follow in their footsteps to avoid giving offense?

No, no, no – a thousand times no.
