Good News: Dawn Johnsen Withdraws Nomination

Dawn Johnsen, President Obama’s radical and ill-advised choice for the Office of Legal Council in the Justice Department, has withdrawn her nomination. This is, of course, good news for those of us who would like to see a common-sense approach to dealing with Bush administration officials alleged misdeeds and federal abortion policy, to name two of many issues on which Ms. Johnsen’s nomination ran aground.

Johnsen’s claim that she would apply a nonpartisan approach in her position fell on numerous deaf ears, primarily because of her own past words. In fact, Johnsen would have been a disaster in this or any other important position in the Justice Department and I for one am glad to see her nomination fail.

Conservatives and libertarians should not, however, celebrate too soon. The president’s next pick could be as bad or worse if he’s feeling cocky after his narrow victory in the health care fight.
