Helen Thomas and the Free Press

Posted on July 2, 2009 by marc

Helen Thomas says “Nixon didn’t try to do that,” Thomas said. “They couldn’t control (the media). They didn’t try. “What the hell do they think we are, puppets? … They’re supposed to stay out of our business. They are our public servants. We pay them. … It’s blatant. They don’t give a damn if you…

Time for Democrats to Forget Past and Lead

Posted on April 26, 2009 by marc

When Barack Obama defeated John McCain the 2008 presidential election it was said that the grownups were taking over, that his presidency would heal America’s divisions, and that his administration would be the most competent and ethical ever. None of these promises have been kept. Now politicians and the media are bickering over the interrogation issue and not paying attention to a major health crisis in the making.

Liberal Tea Party Protest Fails to Boil

Posted on April 11, 2009 by marc

Ed Frank went to the New Way Forward rally and reports that only a dozen or so people attended the left’s answer to conservatives’ “tea parties” that have turned out tens of thousands of people protesting against Barack Obama’s massive deficit spending plan. FDL’s Jane Hamsher was there as promised, though. In a bizarre turn, she accused conservativess of being angry at not being the ones to steal now – interesting word choice, no? – and accused Fox News of organizing the real tea parties. Bizarre.

A Friend in Need…

Posted on March 4, 2009March 4, 2009 by marc

Comments from Left Field writer Kathy is, as you might assume from the title of the blog, not someone I agree with on a regular basis.  But she’s a reasonable, thoughtful person and – to paraphrase the caustic Ms. Ann Coulter – if you must talk to a liberal, it might as well be Kathy!…

The Morning After

Posted on November 5, 2008 by marc

I dare say that most of America went to sleep knowing that Barack Obama was elected president last night.  Yet we’ll wake up to a new reality in which a centuries-old racial barrier was overcome, one political party now controls the future of the nation, another must define what it offers to American, and many…

Voting Integrity

Posted on November 4, 2008 by marc

Earlier this AM I cast my vote for McCain/Palin.  In rural Texas there was a 3-4 minute wait accompanied by some boisterous conversation about how Americans need to scale back their expectation of government-provided services.  Conservative talk, and true, judging from our economic numbers. I also voted on a local school bond issue, meaning that…

McCain Likes ABBA

Posted on August 15, 2008 by marc

Finally, something to actually like about John McCain.  CNN: McCain quickly defended his musical taste, citing the Swedish band’s longevity and crossover success on Broadway. “Now look, everybody says, ‘I hate ABBA. Oh ABBA, how terrible! Blah blah blah,’” he said. “How come everybody goes to ‘Mamma Mia?’ Huh? I mean really, seriously, huh? ‘I…

Obama on Oil

Posted on August 4, 2008August 4, 2008 by marc

Barack Obama’s grasp on what’s needed in a national energy policy is rather tenuous, as his recent statements demonstrate. First the good: "Breaking our oil addiction is one of the greatest challenges our generation will ever face. It will take nothing less than a complete transformation of our economy," he said. "This transformation will be…

Bush Allows More Drilling

Posted on July 14, 2008 by marc

In a long overdue move, President Bush has lifted the ban on offshore oil and gas drilling that his father implemented more than 15 years ago.  The move gives oil and gas companies the freedom to explore for resources in areas they’ve long coveted, to the dismay of environmentalists. Is this the answer to the…

Harvard Muslims Don’t Need to Assimilate

Posted on February 28, 2008 by marc

Harvard University has accepted a Muslim group’s petition to close the school’s Quadrangle Recreational Athletic Center to me for an hour a day so that Muslim women can work out without the presence of men in the gym. Men have not been allowed to enter the Quadrangle Recreational Athletic Center during certain times since Jan….
