Forgetting Past Mistakes is to Repeat Them
After hundreds of thousands of Americans protested his economic policies, Barack Obama batted 1.000 today by releasing the disputed Office of Legal Counsel memos authorizing the use of tortue on captured terrorists, declaring that intelligence officers responsible for the interrogations would not be prosecuted, and announcing that the U.S. will focus on enforcing existing gun smuggling laws rather than re-instituting the lapsed assault weapons ban.
What do you get when you mix a major economic slump, a new president with decidedly liberal ideals, an economic plan that calls for unprecedented levels of spending and debt, and at least 4000 Texans concerned about the situation? Call it a Texas Tea Party!
Like the men on the scene, President Obama deserves kudos for the successful military operation that resulted in the rescue of kidnapped America Captain Richard Phillips. His guys kicked some ass getting Phillips back and the guy in the big chair in D.C. deserves credit for it.
But President Obama has a long way to go before he can claim the kind of steadfast resolve that characterized President Bush’s commitment to the peace in Iraq. But we can’t assume that one small operation, no matter how successful, indicates he will continue to demonstrate such leadership.
Arizona State University is not planning to award Barack Obama an honorary doctorate degree in exchange for giving the commencement address at the school – and rightly so. At this point Mr. Obama’s resume is paper-thin, too much so for the office he already holds.
